ORIGINAL SOLD | GICLÉE PRINTS AVAILABLE
This giclée print is taken from my original oil and gold leaf painting on black walnut wood.
The centuries-old icon, Salus Populi Romani, or Protectress of the Roman People, resides in the Basilica of St. Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome, Italy, and is one of the most beloved images of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope St. Pius V processed through Rome with the Byzantine icon in 1571, praying the rosary and asking Mary's intercession for the Christian naval fleet during the Battle of Lepanto. Recently restored, the icon was presented to Pope Francis and the people of Rome in 2018 after a long process that revitalized the gold colors tarnished by centuries of wear. Oil-painted with gold leaf accents on a reclaimed slab of wood, this gorgeous piece is filled with Catholic symbolism and deep meaning. Various sizes are available.
